RINCON VISTA CLASSROOM FACILITY

The Rincon Vista Classroom Facility was a collaborative project within the University community. Responding to a request for technical assistance from the Department of Campus Recreation, students in the College of Architecture designed and built the rammed earth classroom and support spaces. Professor Rocky Brittain brought students through the various phases of design, construction documents, and construction that also involved the University's department of Facilities Design and Construction and a number of their subcontractors. Professor Mary Hardin and shopmaster Mark Perry joined the effort at the beginning stage of the construction.

The interdisciplinary nature of this project was unique for the UofA campus facility, as was the hands-on construction experience for this graduating class of architecture students. One research agenda for this project was to develop an inexpensive system of formwork for rammed earth construction that could be handled by two people, in contrast to the large, industrial form systems that are used by contractors and their crews. The development of this incremental formwork allowed the project to be accomplished with a low budget for the building envelope, and led to further refinements for use of the system in affordable housing projects.
